Terry Pratchett's Discworld is one of the towering achievements of comic fantasy, a flat world balanced on four elephants atop a giant turtle that became, over forty-one novels, a sharp satire of our own. This collection gathers the books that matter, and the pleasure of Discworld is that it is really several series braided together: the bumbling wizard Rincewind, the surprisingly philosophical Death, the witches of Lancre, the City Watch of Ankh-Morpork, and the young witch Tiffany Aching.
Newcomers are often told not to start at the beginning, because Pratchett grew sharper as he went, trading early parody for genuine moral weight in books like Small Gods and Night Watch. The footnotes are jokes, the jokes hide arguments, and almost none of it has dated.
