The City Watch books are many readers' favorite thread of Terry Pratchett's Discworld, following the ragtag police force of the sprawling city of Ankh-Morpork and its perpetually exasperated commander, Sam Vimes. Guards! Guards! introduces the Watch as near-useless and slowly drags it toward competence; Night Watch sends Vimes back through time into his own past; Snuff and Raising Steam follow him into reluctant respectability.
Pratchett uses the Watch to write about law, class, prejudice, and the uneasy work of keeping order in a chaotic city, all wrapped in detective-story plots and sharp comedy. Vimes, gruff and stubbornly decent, is one of the series' great characters. These are books only here, and among the most pointed and political in the wider Discworld.
