Death

This branch of Terry Pratchett's Discworld follows its most unlikely recurring star: Death, the seven-foot skeleton with a scythe and a surprising interest in what it might mean to be alive. Mort, Reaper Man, and Soul Music turn the Grim Reaper into a comic and oddly moving figure, whether he is taking on an apprentice, getting fired and forced to experience mortality, or watching his granddaughter inherit the family business.

Pratchett uses the character to do what the wider Discworld does best, which is smuggle real questions about death, duty, and free will inside fast, very funny fantasy. These are books-only entries here, and among the warmest in a famously humane series.
