The Witcher

The Witcher is one of the clearest cases of a franchise outgrowing its origins. It began as a cycle of Polish fantasy novels by Andrzej Sapkowski: gritty, morally grey stories about Geralt, a mutated monster hunter for hire who would rather be paid than be a hero.

CD Projekt Red's game trilogy then did something rare. Rather than adapting the books, it served as a canonical sequel to them, culminating in The Witcher 3, widely regarded as a high point for open-world role-playing. From there the property expanded into Netflix television, animated films, a card game spun out of its own minigame, and richly composed soundtracks rooted in Slavic folk music.
