Monkey Island is the comedy crown jewel of LucasArts' point-and-click era, the series that proved adventure games could be genuinely, reliably funny. You play Guybrush Threepwood, a hopeless wannabe pirate who bumbles his way through the Caribbean, trades insults in sword duels, and keeps crossing paths with the undead pirate LeChuck and his on-again romance with Governor Elaine Marley.
The run here spans the whole arc: the 1990 original and its sharper 1991 sequel LeChuck's Revenge, the lush hand-drawn Curse of Monkey Island (1997), the 3D Escape from Monkey Island (2000), and Ron Gilbert's long-awaited Return to Monkey Island in 2022. It is a games-only series, and its appeal has barely aged, because the draw was never graphics but writing: absurd puzzles, deadpan jokes, and one of the most likable losers in games.
