Thomas Ligotti is an American horror writer and philosopher whose fiction sits in the weird tradition, closer to gothic short stories and novellas than to the modern horror novel. Critics file him under philosophical horror, which is accurate: the pessimism and nihilism his characters live inside are the same positions he argues in his non-fiction. He works almost entirely at short length, and he works slowly, which is part of why The Washington Post once called him the best kept secret in contemporary horror fiction. He has won the Bram Stoker Award for Best Fiction Collection and the Bram Stoker Award for Lifetime Achievement.

Where to start with Thomas Ligotti
Songs of a Dead Dreamer is the one to read first, and the one people quote: early, strange, and already fully formed. Teatro Grottesco is the better collection if you want the corporate dread and the sick towns, and it is where his prose is at its most controlled. Darkness is for readers already converted. Nothing here is comforting, and none of it explains itself.
