Jeff VanderMeer

Jeff VanderMeer is an author.

Jeff VanderMeer is an American novelist, editor and critic who came out of the New Weird and then found a mainstream audience with the Southern Reach books. Annihilation, the first of them, won the Nebula and the Shirley Jackson Award and was filmed by Alex Garland. His fiction is interested in ecology as something that does not care about us, and in institutions that fail to describe what they are studying. With his wife Ann VanderMeer he has edited anthologies that largely set the terms for how the weird tale is now discussed, among them The Weird and The Big Book of Science Fiction.

Where to start with Jeff VanderMeer

Annihilation is the one, under two hundred pages of expedition notes that get stranger with every chapter. Authority slows to office politics and loses a lot of readers, though it is the smarter book. Acceptance pays the trilogy off, and Area X collects all three if you would rather commit at once. City of Saints and Madmen is the early weird fiction and the best evidence he was always this odd.
