Demi Lovato

Demi Lovato is an actor, born 1992.

Barney & Friends is where this starts, which is the least glamorous possible beginning and the most common one for the Disney generation. Lovato appeared on the children's series as Angela in the early 2000s, then on the Disney Channel short-form series As the Bell Rings, and then arrived properly with Camp Rock in 2008 as Mitchie Torres.

Camp Rock did two jobs at once, exactly as the machine was designed to. It made Lovato a television-movie lead and it launched a recording career: the soundtrack's This Is Me, a duet with Joe Jonas, reached number nine on the Billboard Hot 100. Sonny with a Chance followed in 2009, a sitcom set around a sketch-comedy show, along with Princess Protection Program the same year, and Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam closed the loop in 2010.

Music then took over, and acting became occasional rather than a living. The albums Demi and Confident belong to that stretch. Screen work since has been guest-shaped and mostly comic: Maia in From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series, a voice role as Smurfette, Jenny on Will & Grace, and a very funny early-scene turn as Katiana in Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga. There was also a season judging The X Factor.

The recent turn is reflective rather than performing. The 2024 documentary Child Star examines the exact industry that produced everything above, and a third Camp Rock is now on the way, which is a neat piece of circularity.

Where to start with Demi Lovato

The obvious entry is Camp Rock, still the best pure showcase, since Mitchie Torres was built as a star vehicle and works exactly as designed. Sonny with a Chance is the better acting, though, a sitcom that asked for timing rather than earnestness and got it. Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam is for people who liked the first one and for nobody else. Among the adult work, Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga contains the funniest few minutes of the whole filmography and From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series the strangest casting. Child Star is the one to finish on, a documentary about young fame that flips the question back on its subject. If the music is the real interest, Confident is the album that best matches the on-screen persona.
