Bong Joon Ho

Bong Joon Ho makes genre films that stop being genre films about forty minutes in. A monster movie becomes a bureaucratic farce. A serial-killer procedural becomes a portrait of a country that cannot investigate itself. He works out of South Korea, was born in Daegu in 1969, and has spent twenty-five years refusing to let a tone settle.

Memories of Murder (2003) is the clearest statement of the method. It is built like a detective story and steadily removes every satisfaction a detective story offers, and its final shot is among the most famous in Korean cinema. The Host (2006) put a creature in the Han River and gave the family chasing it a scene of collective grief so overplayed that it turns funny and then unbearable. Mother (2009) is his cruellest film and his most tender.

Then came the English-language co-productions, a change of scale rather than of subject. Snowpiercer and Okja put the same class argument inside bigger machinery. Parasite (2019) is where every instinct converged: it took the Palme d'Or at Cannes and then Academy Awards for directing, for the original screenplay, and for best picture, the first film not in English to win that. Mickey 17 followed in 2025. He also acts occasionally, in small parts for other Korean directors, which tells you something about how he sees the job.
