Ultima VII: The Black Gate (1992)
Ultima VII: The Black Gate is a 1992 role-playing (rpg) video game made by Origin Systems.
Two hundred years after the Avatar's last departure, Britannia looks prosperous on the surface. Lord British rules over a kingdom of arts and virtue, and a new organization called the Fellowship has spread through every town, preaching unity and goodwill to eager converts. The Avatar returns to investigate a brutal ritual murder in Trinsic and begins pulling at a thread that runs deep through the kingdom's institutions. Ultima VII is a dense, breathing open world where every NPC follows a daily schedule and the writing trusts players to notice when something feels morally wrong.

A few thoughts on Ultima VII: The Black Gate
For the moral weight of a world where corruption wears a virtuous face, The Final Empire follows a rebellion against a seemingly unkillable empire, with the same emphasis on systemic rot beneath a polished surface. Frieren: Beyond Journey's End shares the elegiac quality of a hero returning to a world that has quietly moved on without them.
When good ideals become the weapon
The Fellowship exploits the very ethical framework the Avatar spent earlier games building. Stories where the corruption of genuine virtues, not simple greed, is the real threat.
