Tony (2026)

Tony is a 2026 drama movie directed by Matt Johnson, with a running time of 1h 47m. It stars Dominic Sessa, Antonio Banderas and Emilia Jones.

A summer job in a Cape Cod resort town, a kitchen running hot, and a nineteen-year-old with no plan past the next shift. Matt Johnson co-writes and directs this account of Anthony Bourdain's early years cooking in Provincetown, Massachusetts, the stretch that later supplied stories for his 2000 memoir Kitchen Confidential.

Dominic Sessa plays Bourdain long before the books and the television work. Emilia Jones, Leo Woodall, Stavros Halkias, Dagmara Dominczyk and Rich Sommer fill out the restaurant and the town around him, with Antonio Banderas in the cast. Johnson pitches it as comedy and drama at once, so expect service-industry humor and the closed-ranks loyalty of a line crew, with a young man's summer quietly setting the course of the rest of his life.

Readers who know Kitchen Confidential get the origin of that voice, the season before Bourdain had a voice at all. Anyone coming in cold gets a coming-of-age story told among cooks, dishwashers and a seasonal town that empties out once the weather turns. It arrives in 2026.

A few thoughts on Tony

Follow it with Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations, the travel series Bourdain built on the reputation this summer started, and the easiest way to hear the man the film is casting backwards from. The Bear runs at the same temperature: a restaurant kitchen, shouted orders, a crew that holds together under pressure. Sweetbitter takes the newcomer angle instead, one person learning a dining room from the bottom rung up. On the page, Appetites is Bourdain's own cookbook, written in the voice this film traces back to its source. For kitchen life at a gentler pace, the manga Ristorante Paradiso and What Did You Eat Yesterday? treat cooking as daily routine rather than combat.
