Ted Lasso (2020)

Ted Lasso is a 2020 drama series created by Bill Lawrence and Jason Sudeikis. It stars Jason Sudeikis, Hannah Waddingham and Jeremy Swift.

A man who has never watched a professional soccer match walks into an English dressing room with a box of biscuits and a sincere plan. That is the joke for about two episodes. After that the show starts taking him seriously, and so do you.

Ted Lasso coaches American college football until AFC Richmond hires him to run its Premier League side. The club's owner picked him for that inexperience and expects the season to collapse on schedule. Ted treats pessimism as a habit rather than a personality, and he goes to work on the players long before the tactics.

The jokes come fast, the puns are shameless, and then a scene slows down and lets somebody say the true thing out loud. Jason Sudeikis plays Ted as a man whose kindness costs him something. Hannah Waddingham gives Rebecca a dry, wounded steel. Brett Goldstein's Roy Kent growls through the profanity like a man irritated by his own feelings, and Brendan Hunt's Coach Beard says next to nothing while knowing everything. Keeley holds the room together by liking people without embarrassment.

Three seasons ran on Apple TV+ between 2020 and 2023, ten to twelve episodes apiece, with a fourth due in August 2026. Watch it for a sports story where the scoreboard matters less than the boot room, and for earnestness served without an apology. Knowing the offside rule is optional.

A few thoughts on Ted Lasso

If what got you was one relentless optimist rearranging a town that had decided to stay bitter, Pollyanna is the 1913 ancestor of that plot, and spikier than its reputation suggests. For the flirting-as-combat between Roy and Keeley, read Much Ado About Nothing and watch Beatrice and Benedick insult each other into honesty. Twelfth Night, or What You Will covers the other half: a stranger dropped into a strange country where everybody is nursing a grief under the comedy. On a controller, Undertale rewards mercy the way Ted does, and it will make you feel things about a talking flower. Natsume's Book of Friends runs on the same engine as Richmond's locker room, a gentle person among prickly strangers, small kindnesses stacking up into something.

Comedies that are kind without being soft

Ted Lasso gets its laughs from puns and a biscuit tin, then asks you to take the coach at his word. These share that trick: jokes first, real affection underneath, nobody humiliated for a punchline. Cheers and Scrubs run on the same ensemble warmth, M*A*S*H keeps it going through grim material, and Frieren and Undertale carry it into other media.

Sports stories that live in the dressing room

AFC Richmond is a workplace before it is a team, and Ted Lasso spends most of its time in the boot room, the owner's office and the press conference rather than on the pitch. Welcome to Wrexham and Dear England follow the same rooms for real, Ballers works the business end, and the management sims put you behind that desk.

Coaching a team in a country you don't know

Ted arrives in Richmond knowing nothing about the sport, the city or why anyone cares this much, and has to earn a squad that made up its mind before he landed. Next Goal Wins and Playing for Keeps drop coaches into unfamiliar countries, Britt-Marie takes over a village side she never asked for, and Fever Pitch explains the devotion he walked into.

Coaches who fix the person before the tactics

Ted works on Jamie, Roy and Nate long before he works on the formation, which is why the football matters less than the people playing it. Mean Machine hands a disgraced captain a squad of inmates, The Big Green and The Wild Soccer Bunch build sides out of kids nobody rated, and Eyeshield 21 drags a coward into a helmet.
