Outer Banks (2020)

Outer Banks is a 2020 action & adventure series created by Shannon Burke and Jonas Pate. It stars Chase Stokes, Madelyn Cline and Madison Bailey.

Sunburn, salt water and a rumor about sunken gold that nobody's parents need to hear about. Outer Banks landed on Netflix in April 2020 and plants itself on a North Carolina barrier island where the summer money and the year-round paychecks live on opposite sides of the same water.

Chase Stokes plays John B, the teenager at the center of the hunt, with Madelyn Cline, Madison Bailey, Jonathan Daviss, Rudy Pankow and Carlacia Grant as the friends who go along with him. A second group of island teenagers wants the same lost fortune, and that rivalry is the engine Josh Pate, Jonas Pate and Shannon Burke built the show on. It runs like an adventure serial with a teen drama's cast: boats, dives, a mystery that gives up one piece per episode, and constant arguing about who has any right to the prize.

Money does real work in the writing. The class split puts a grudge under the treasure hunt, so every dive and every shouting match carries more heat than a straight adventure would. The whole thing is shot for sunlight, cut fast, and cheerfully pulpy about danger. If you loved [[work:the-goonies-1985]] as a kid and want the sweatier, older, more romantic version of that afternoon, you will settle in fast.

A few thoughts on Outer Banks

Play Uncharted: Drake's Fortune next. Nathan Drake chases an old map through jungle and wreckage on the same mix of banter, bad odds and diving that John B's crew runs on, and Uncharted 4: A Thief's End adds the family history and the loyalty tests. On film, The Goonies is the direct ancestor: broke kids, a coastal town, a map, and adults with money circling. Into the Blue keeps the water and the greed with an older cast, while Treasure of Matecumbe and the 1990 Treasure Island cover the courtlier, older-fashioned version of the same hunt. In print, Ghost Canoe puts a teenager on a fogged coast with a shipwreck mystery at a manageable length, and One Piece scales the crew-chasing-a-legend idea up to a lifetime of volumes.

Treasure hunts kids run without the adults

John B and the Pogues chase a wrecked ship's gold with a borrowed boat, a dive tank and nobody's permission, and Outer Banks keeps the danger sized for teenagers. These hand the map to kids too: a Goonies basement, a Disney hunt through the Florida Keys, a Netflix sequel to a treasure franchise, and two novels that send young diggers underground.

Sunken wrecks and the divers who go after them

Half of Outer Banks happens in the water: scuba tanks, a sunken hull off the North Carolina coast, and somebody faster circling above the dive site. Take these when the salvage is the draw. Two of them chase real wrecks with sonar, permits and a film crew, and the rest put swimmers over gold that belongs to someone else.

Teen detectives working a case the adults ignore

The Pogues work their case like amateur detectives, trading a stolen key, a hotel ledger and an old compass between them while the adults look elsewhere. Outer Banks gives its teenagers the evidence and the mistakes. These follow young investigators who build a case from scraps: a Netflix mystery, a long-running anime sleuth, two Nancy Drew games set on the water, and two novels for readers who started young.

Pirate gold legends behind the modern hunt

The gold in Outer Banks belongs to a wrecked 18th century ship, and the Pogues read its story out of archives and church records before they go near the water. These are the pirate stories underneath: Blackbeard on the same Carolina coast, Stevenson's Long John Silver across film, TV and comics, a Drake expedition rebuilt as a game, and a manga crew still chasing one hoard after 25 years.
