Mammal (2016)

Mammal is a 2016 drama movie directed by Rebecca Daly, with a running time of 1h 39m. It stars Rachel Griffiths, Barry Keoghan and Michael McElhatton.

Quiet, watchful, and in no hurry to explain itself. Margaret is a divorcée in Dublin living with the loss of her teenage son, and Rebecca Daly's film stays close to her through ordinary hours instead of big scenes.

Joe arrives in that space, a homeless young man, wary and hard to place. The arrangement the two of them reach has no name for it, and the film declines to supply one. Rachel Griffiths plays Margaret with little outward signal, so you read her through her decisions rather than her speeches. Barry Keoghan, early in his career, gives Joe a stillness that keeps his wants unreadable. Michael McElhatton plays an ex-husband whose grieving runs hotter and louder, with Nika McGuigan and Johnny Ward at the edges of the story.

Daly co-wrote the screenplay with Glenn Montgomery, and the two of them withhold the explanatory scene most dramas build toward. Daly shows you behaviour and leaves the accounting to you. The Irish, Luxembourgish and Dutch co-production screened at the 2016 Sundance Film Festival in the World Cinema Dramatic Competition, and it carries the patience of European art cinema along with a refusal to console. Worth your evening if you want a drama to sit inside rather than one that ties itself off.

A few thoughts on Mammal

Colm Tóibín's Nora Webster covers this ground from the inside: a widow in an Irish town, surrounded by people who want her to grieve on a schedule, written in prose as plain as Daly's camera. The Japanese series anone builds the closest match to Margaret and Joe's arrangement, a woman and a drifting young stranger assembling a household with no blood or legal claim on each other, and it withholds explanations just as stubbornly. Maid runs warmer and more procedural, though it gets the texture of precarity right: shifts, forms, housing offices, the daily arithmetic of a life with no cushion. Start with the Tóibín if you want the interior weather Daly keeps off screen.
