At the time of recording, the group comprised Mike Kinsella on vocals and guitar, Steve Holmes on guitar, and Steve Lamos on drums, marking this as the band's only album to feature as a trio. LP1 was recorded in May 1999 at Private Studios in Urbana, Illinois, with production from Brendan Gamble.
