Original title: 1박 2일

2 Days and 1 Night is a 2007 Korean-language comedy series created by Nah Yung-suk. It stars Kim Jong-min, Eun Ji-won and Jo Se-ho.

Pack for one night. That is the entire premise, and KBS2 has been building Sunday evenings out of it since August 2007, under a motto the show takes at its word: real wild road variety.

The genre label is reality variety, which means the cast appear as themselves and the trip actually happens. A group of regulars heads out to a real place somewhere in South Korea, stays over, and comes home. The destination carries the episode. Every trip works as a recommendation, a village or coastline or mountain town you could drive to yourself, and filming happens about two weeks before broadcast, so the season on screen matches the season outside your window.

Korean variety runs on long-serving casts, and this one has outlasted almost all of them. It began as a segment on Happy Sunday. Kim Jong-min has been aboard since the early years, now alongside Moon Se-yoon, DinDin, Lee Joon, Lee Yong-jin and Lee Ki-taek, with earlier line-ups built around Eun Ji-won, Kim Joon-ho and MC Mong. Chemistry accumulates in a cast like that. Jokes reach back seasons, and a newcomer has to find his footing on camera while everyone watches.

No prior knowledge required. KBS World posts subtitled episodes weekly on YouTube, and any single trip stands on its own: some driving, some food, a lot of people enjoying each other's company at 6:10 on a Sunday evening.

A few thoughts on 2 Days and 1 Night

The pleasure here is people being funny together somewhere unfamiliar, and that travels into print. The Humor Code sends two researchers around the world to work out why anything is funny, and the method rhymes: show up in a strange town, ask the locals, sit with the awkward parts. Trevor Noah's Born a Crime carries the same warmth and the same rootedness, a comedian explaining his own country through its neighbourhoods, languages and food, which is close to what a good episode does for a Korean county. For the ensemble banter on its own, try Giant Days, a comic running on the same engine: a fixed group of friends, stakes kept small, jokes that land because you know these people.

Variety shows you watch for the regulars, not the guests

The trips on 2 Days and 1 Night matter less than the people taking them. KBS2 has run the format since August 2007, long enough that the cast's habits, grudges and running jokes do most of the comic work. These shows ask the same patience: give them a few episodes and the regulars start feeling like people you know.

Unscripted comedy built on silly games and forfeits

On 2 Days and 1 Night the cast play daft physical games to settle who eats dinner and who sleeps outside in the cold. The stakes stay tiny and the scrambling is the whole appeal. These shows run the same engine: put performers in a game, keep the rules loose, film whatever they do about losing.
