No dogfights, just a linguist trying to understand a language that bends time, and a story that turns out to be about grief and choice. Contact shares its patience and its awe. Both believe the hardest part of meeting another species is not the technology. It is understanding, and being changed by it.

The genre has two faces. In the wonder tradition, contact is the most important thing that ever happened to us: E.T. and Close Encounters meet the unknown with childlike awe. In the invasion tradition, the ships block out the sun and humanity fights for its life. The same event, read as either the start of everything or the end of it.

Independence Day turned annihilation into a crowd-pleaser, War of the Worlds made it a panicked ground-level nightmare, and District 9 flipped the whole thing on its head: what if we were the cruel ones, and the aliens the refugees? The invasion story is rarely subtle, but at its best it is holding up a very pointed mirror.
