Max Payne is neo-noir built around a grieving New York cop whose wife and child were murdered, and the bullet-time gunfights that let him dive sideways through a room in slow motion. The games are drenched in pulpy hardboiled narration and graphic-novel cutscenes, a knowing pastiche of crime fiction soaked in pain and painkillers. Max Payne 2 deepened the romance and the melancholy; Max Payne 3 (2012) traded the snowy city for the heat of Brazil.
The series also reached film with a 2008 live-action adaptation, which struggled to translate the games' tone and landed to a poor reception. The games remain the real article: stylish, bleak, and unmistakably their own thing.
The Max Payne franchise spans 2 games, 1 movies in the CrossBinge catalog.
