Veronica Falcón

Veronica Falcón is an actor, born 1966.

By the time American audiences met Veronica Falcón as Camila Vargas, she had been working in Mexico for two decades. The earliest credit here is Midaq Alley in 1995, the Mexico City drama, and she works as a choreographer as well as an actress, which is not incidental: she knows precisely how much movement a scene will carry, and she almost never spends more than it can.

Queen of the South was the break, three seasons of Camila Vargas, and it established what she is now hired for, which is authority delivered quietly. Falcón plays powerful women who never raise their voice because they have never had to, and the effect is that everyone else in the scene starts talking too much.

HBO's Perry Mason reboot used exactly that in 2020, with Lupe Gibbs, and Ozark used it again when she arrived as Camila Elizondro for the fourth season in 2022. Walking into a finished ensemble that late and immediately outranking it is a hard trick, and she made it look procedural.

The film work has been broader in every sense: Trader Sam in Jungle Cruise, Lydia in The Forever Purge, a doctor in Imaginary, Marianne Sancar in Voyagers, Julia in A Million Miles Away, and Mama Donya Madani in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. Lee Cronin's The Mummy is next.

Where to start with Veronica Falcón

Three seasons of Camila Vargas in Queen of the South is the most complete work she has done, so start there.

If that is too much of a commitment, Perry Mason is the prestige short cut and the better-looking show, while her Ozark season is the tightest thing in this list: a late arrival who changes the temperature of every room she walks into. The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is the Marvel appearance and smaller than you would want.

For films, A Million Miles Away is the warm one, Jungle Cruise is the one the family will sit through, and Midaq Alley is the deep cut, a Mexican classic with her in it long before any of the above.
