Valente Rodriguez is an actor, born 1961.
Rodriguez was born in Edcouch, in the Rio Grande Valley, and spent his first decade on screen playing people with job titles instead of names. A doorman in Impulse. A liquor store clerk in Twenty Bucks. A freeway driver in The Rich Man's Wife. An orderly in Mr. Jones. His two credited early parts, Chuey in the 1988 dance picture Salsa and Frankie in the 1993 prison drama released as Bound by Honor, are the ones the biographies bother to list.
The skill that kept him working is narrow and genuinely difficult: he can make a functionary register as a person inside six lines. In Volcano he is a train driver in the tunnel. In Deep Blue Sea he is a helicopter co-pilot. In Erin Brockovich he is a man named Donald on the other side of a desk. These are structurally disposable roles, written to deliver information and get out, and he plays them like the scene is happening to him too, which is why the same casting directors kept calling.
George Lopez changed the scale without changing the register. As Ernie Cardenas, the friend and co-worker, he got to run a joke across a whole series rather than one scene, and it made him a face American audiences recognised. He followed it with Cesar on Happily Divorced.
What came after is the pleasant part of the arc. The bit players turned into authority: Principal Camillo in McFarland, USA, Judge Rivas in Instant Family, a priest in Countdown, Principal Gutiérrez on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. He aged into the desk he used to stand in front of.

Where to start with Valente Rodriguez
George Lopez is the obvious entry point and the honest one, because it is the only place you can watch him build something over time rather than land a scene and leave. Ernie is the friend the show keeps returning to, and Rodriguez plays him without any of the mugging the format invites.
For the film work, McFarland, USA shows the later mode, an administrator with actual weight in the room, and Bound by Honor shows the young one, in the era's biggest Chicano ensemble drama. Then go looking for the small stuff on purpose. Erin Brockovich and (500) Days of Summer give him a handful of lines each, Volcano gives him a tunnel and a train, and the interesting exercise is noticing how much shape he gets into parts that were written as furniture. Instant Family is the same trick with a judge's bench.
