Trudi Canavan

Trudi Canavan is an author.

Trudi Canavan is an Australian fantasy novelist who worked as a graphic designer while she wrote her way out of it. The Black Magician trilogy, about a slum girl whose untrained power forces a guild of magicians to admit her, sold well enough internationally to make her a full-time writer, and she has since built two more series in the same world plus the multi-world Millennium's Rule books. She writes conventional secondary-world fantasy without apology, and does it with an unusual attention to class: her magic systems tend to be arguments about who is allowed to be taught.

Where to start with Trudi Canavan

The Magicians' Guild opens the Black Magician trilogy and is the right starting point, with The Novice and The High Lord completing it. The Magician's Apprentice is the prequel and reads better afterwards. For the later, stranger material, Angel of Storms sits midway through Millennium's Rule, and The Ambassador's Mission begins the Traitor Spy books twenty years on.
