Tony Goldwyn
Tony Goldwyn is an actor, born 1960.
Goldwyn's first film was a slasher, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives, in 1986. His breakthrough came four years later as Carl Bruner in Ghost, a piece of casting that depends entirely on how trustworthy he looks. It earned a Saturn Award nomination and typed him for a decade as the well-dressed man in the room you should probably be watching more carefully.
He has since built a long career out of institutional men, and the useful thing about him is that he plays decency and rot in exactly the same register. Colonel Bagley in The Last Samurai, Michael Drucker in The 6th Day, Gordon Gray chairing the security hearing in Oppenheimer: none of them announce themselves. He can deliver terrible news in a voice that sounds like an offer of help.
The serious credits arrived in the middle. Harold Nixon in Nixon brought a SAG Award nomination, and he played Neil Armstrong in the HBO miniseries From the Earth to the Moon. Television eventually gave him his largest audience with a lead role on Scandal. He directs as well, a second career the acting has largely obscured.
Now he is the reliable authority figure of prestige American film: the coach in King Richard, the executive voice in Plane, a supporting part in One Battle After Another. It is not a flashy body of work, but it is a remarkably durable one, and the through line from Ghost to Oppenheimer is a face an audience trusts and a director can weaponise.

Where to start with Tony Goldwyn
Start at Ghost, which is still the cleanest demonstration of what he is for: the film's whole structure depends on the audience believing him for as long as possible, and he gives them no reason not to.
For the television version at length, Scandal is the commitment, and it is a soap that knows exactly what it is. If you want his best straight acting in a couple of hours instead, Nixon and From the Earth to the Moon are the ones the Ghost audience never found. Recently he has been the quiet professional in very good films: Oppenheimer, where he runs a hearing with lethal politeness, King Richard, and One Battle After Another. The Last Samurai and Kiss the Girls cover the studio middle years.
Ghost and the nineties
Carl in Ghost typed him as a very particular kind of well-dressed antagonist and the nineties spent a decade confirming it. Nixon is the serious one, playing the president's brother and getting a SAG nomination.
Scandal and television
Scandal changed the career at fifty, making him a president and an unlikely sex symbol across seven seasons. The later television is more interesting, with Lovecraft Country giving him something genuinely nasty to do.
The directing and recent films
He has directed five features, which is not a sideline. Conviction is the best of them, and Ezra is the recent one he also stars in. Oppenheimer is the biggest recent acting credit and only a handful of scenes.
