Thomas Haden Church
Thomas Haden Church is an actor, born 1960.
Church spent the 1990s in sitcoms, first on Wings and then as the lead of Ned & Stacey for two seasons, and by the end of the decade he was a recognisable comic actor with a very specific delivery: slow, flat and faintly baffled, as though each line has arrived from somewhere else and he is deciding what to do with it. George of the Jungle put that to work as a preening villain in 1997.
Sideways in 2004 was the reinvention. Jack is a fading actor on a wine trip, lying constantly and never quite lying to himself, and Church plays him with real generosity: the man is selfish but not stupid, and the performance refuses to let you write him off. It brought an Academy Award nomination, an Independent Spirit Award and a share of the SAG ensemble prize. Two years later he won an Emmy for the Western miniseries Broken Trail.
Since then he has been a genuinely unpredictable hire. Sandman in Spider-Man 3 and again in No Way Home, where four lines are enough for him to find a whole tired man. The Brawndo chief executive in Idiocracy. The teacher in Easy A. Killer Joe, which is the nastiest thing he has done, and The Peanut Butter Falcon, which is the sweetest. Twisted Metal in 2023 and Wake Up Dead Man in 2025 suggest he has settled comfortably into being the best thing in things.

Where to start with Thomas Haden Church
Nothing here competes with Sideways. Jack is the role that reintroduced him as a serious actor, and the performance is considerably kinder to the character than the script requires. Then Broken Trail, the Western miniseries that won him an Emmy and remains the least-seen good thing he has done.
Tombstone is the early credit worth noticing. Idiocracy gives him four minutes and one of the film's best jokes. Easy A has him doing warm and decent, which happens less often than you would expect. Killer Joe is the ugly one and is not for everybody. The Peanut Butter Falcon is the opposite, an easy charmer where he turns up late and walks off with it. Spider-Man 3 is the blockbuster, and Sandman is the one element of that film nobody argues about.
Sideways and the character work
Sideways got him the Oscar nomination and is the performance everything after rests on, a man who is entirely and cheerfully awful. Killer Joe is the nastiest thing here and he is very good in it.
The comedies
The deadpan drawl in its natural habitat. Easy A gives him the one decent adult in the film, Idiocracy uses him for about three lines that people still quote, and George of the Jungle is the early one.
The blockbusters and television
Sandman is the biggest thing he has done and No Way Home brought him back for it two decades later. Wings is where the whole career started, five years as a mechanic on a sitcom he then walked away from.
