Music came first and for a long time it was the whole thing: singer, songwriter, dancer, choreographer, director of her own videos. The early screen credits extend that work rather than replace it, Rena in Stomp the Yard 2: Homecoming, Sabrina in Madea's Big Happy Family, then a run on Hit the Floor.

A Thousand and One is where the acting stopped being a sideline. As Inez she plays somebody whose choices are indefensible and entirely comprehensible at once, and she never asks the audience to forgive her for any of them. That is the performance that changed how she gets cast.

Her record now carries a Golden Globe for best supporting actress in a motion picture, two Critics Choice Awards and an NAACP Image Award, along with nominations at the Academy Awards, BAFTA and the Grammys. Time named her one of its 2026 Women of the Year. Perfidia in One Battle After Another is the most discussed of the recent parts, and the slate around it is busy: Detective Kay Raymond in STRAW, Mary Magdalene in The Book of Clarence, Imani in the White Men Can't Jump remake, Bopoto in Coming 2 America, more detective work in The Rip.

The dancer never went away, and it shows. She moves through a scene like somebody who knows precisely where the camera is, which reads on screen as confidence and is in fact technique.
