Tamara Tunie

Few actors have logged as many hours in a fictional morgue. Tunie played Dr. Melinda Warner, the medical examiner on Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, from 2000 to 2021, which is a two-decade run in a job that exists to deliver information. The trick she found is to play it as though the verdict were already formed: she walks in, explains the body, and lets you understand that she has decided what she thinks of everyone in the room before opening the folder. Alongside it ran a soap career as the attorney Jessica Griffin on As the World Turns.

The film work is less visible and more varied. She was in Wall Street in 1987, then Rising Sun, City Hall, The Peacemaker, Snake Eyes and The Devil's Advocate through the 1990s, and she narrates Eve's Bayou, which is one of the most beautiful uses of her voice on record. The Caveman's Valentine brought an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Supporting Female. Later came Flight, and Cissy Houston in Whitney Houston: I Wanna Dance with Somebody, a part that has to carry a real and complicated mother.

She also sings, directs and produces, which the industry has been slower to use than it should have been. Recent credits run from Nevla in See and Ana in the live-action Cowboy Bebop to a voice role in Elio, and in 2025 she went back to daytime as Anita Dupree on Beyond the Gates, returning to daytime, where she made her name.
