Steve Monroe

Steve Monroe has three jobs. He is an actor, a stand-up comedian and a practising psychotherapist, which is a combination nobody else on this list can match. Born in Tulsa in 1972, he has worked steadily since 1990 without once being the person on the poster.

The film credits read like a map of American comedy's second row. He is the pickpocket victim in Another 48 Hrs., a student in The Nutty Professor, the son in Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, and in 2000 alone he turns up in Cast Away, Miss Congeniality and Space Cowboys, playing a name, a name and a waiter. The later parts are the same size in better films: Barry Belson in Jersey Boys, Mailman Henry in Suburbicon, Lincoln in Promising Young Woman, a realtor in It Ends with Us.

Television gave him more room. He recurred as Steve on Sister, Sister, played Haggis on The Suite Life on Deck and Frostbite on Supah Ninjas, and had a run as Scott Proctor on Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. His Wikipedia summary still calls that his most recent role, which the credits contradict: he was on Acapulco in 2021 and Georgie & Mandy's First Marriage in 2024.

There is no headline performance in any of this, and that is worth saying plainly rather than dressing up. It is the shape of the career most working actors actually have. Somebody has to be the flight attendant in School for Scoundrels, and being that person for thirty-five years while also holding a clinical practice is its own achievement.
