Steve Carell
Steve Carell is an actor, born 1962.
Steven John Carell spent years as a supporting comic actor with an unusual specialty: playing men with no accurate picture of themselves. Brick Tamland in Anchorman is the pure form, a weather presenter operating on about four working thoughts. Bruce Almighty gave him a newsreader coming apart on air. Then The Office handed him Michael Scott, and the character became one of the defining performances of American television, largely because Carell refused to let him be only a fool. He worked on the show as producer, executive producer, writer and director as well, and won a Golden Globe for it. Life magazine called him America's funniest man.
His comic technique is built on the silence after the joke. He will say something appalling and then hold his face still while the room adjusts, and the discomfort does more work than the line did. The 40 Year Old Virgin runs on exactly that, and so does the least sympathetic corner of Little Miss Sunshine.
The dramatic second act surprised people who had not been paying attention. Foxcatcher, The Big Short, Battle of the Sexes, Beautiful Boy and Vice all use the same underlying instrument, an unreadable man who does not know he is being watched, and simply remove the permission to laugh. He also has a parallel career as one of the most successful voice actors alive, playing Gru across four Despicable Me films and the Minions spin-offs, and he has done recent television in The Morning Show and Space Force. His accolades include the Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild ensemble award.

Where to start with Steve Carell
The Office is where to start, but skip the first six episodes, which have not worked out what the character is yet. Once it settles, the show becomes the best long-form comic performance of its era, and the reason is that he plays desperation rather than stupidity.
For film, The 40 Year Old Virgin holds up much better than its title suggests, mostly because he plays the lead with real dignity. Little Miss Sunshine is the small, sour one and probably the best film he is in.
The pivot is worth taking seriously: Foxcatcher is genuinely unnerving and Beautiful Boy asks him to do nothing but absorb, which he does well. The Big Short is the most enjoyable of the dramatic run.
If you want the loud version, Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy is four scenes of nonsense he steals outright. Despicable Me is the family-shelf entry, and Gru is a better piece of voice acting than the sequels around it deserve.
The comedies
Brick Tamland in Anchorman is a handful of lines and steals the film outright. The 40-Year-Old Virgin is the lead role that made him bankable, and Crazy, Stupid, Love is the one that showed the comedy could carry real hurt underneath it.
The dramatic turns
Foxcatcher is the transformation everyone points at, under prosthetics and almost silent throughout. Little Miss Sunshine came first and is the better film. Beautiful Boy is the hardest of them to sit through.
The animation
Gru is the voice role of his career and the accent, which he invented on the spot in the audition, is most of the character. That franchise has now made more money than everything else on this page combined.
