Stephen Root
Stephen Root is an actor, born 1951.
Stephen Root is the character actor other character actors watch. Attention first came from Jimmy James on NewsRadio (1995 to 1999), Milton Waddams in Office Space (1999), and Bill Dauterive and Buck Strickland on King of the Hill. Nobody has ever gone to a film because he was in it, and a startling number of good films have him somewhere in the second half of the cast list.
His register is men who are slightly out of sync with the room and entirely certain that they are not. Milton is the purest distillation: a mumbled, unbroken grievance about a stapler, delivered by a man nobody has listened to in years, and Root plays it with total conviction rather than for laughs, which is why it is funny and also why it is bleak. He can flip that same quality to menace with almost no visible adjustment, which is what Get Out uses. Jim Hudson is mild, blind and reasonable, and the mildness is the horror.
He has turned up in five Coen films, from O Brother, Where Art Thou? and The Ladykillers through No Country for Old Men and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs to The Tragedy of Macbeth, which is as good an endorsement as the supporting-actor profession offers. Barry finally handed him a lead-sized part in Monroe Fuches, a man who is pathetic and lethal in alternating scenes. Alongside all of it runs a steady voice career: Bubbles in the Finding Nemo films, Bud Gleeful in Gravity Falls, three characters in Rango.

Where to start with Stephen Root
Nobody starts a Stephen Root marathon on purpose, so start where everyone actually met him: Office Space. Milton is an eight-minute part that turned into a cultural fixture, and it holds up because Root plays a genuinely sad man rather than a bit.
Then Barry, the show that gave him the biggest canvas of his career and let him be funny and frightening in the same episode. If you only watch one thing here, make it this.
Get Out shows the quiet version of the same menace, and No Country for Old Men and The Ballad of Buster Scruggs are two short Coen appearances that demonstrate how much he can do with a single scene. The Man in the High Castle is his best straight dramatic role, O Brother, Where Art Thou? is the funniest one-scene cameo, and Finding Nemo is the voice work most people have heard without knowing it.
The Coen brothers films
Four films for the Coens and four completely different men, which is the whole argument for him as a character actor. His scene in No Country for Old Men runs about three minutes and people remember it.
The comedies and the cult roles
Milton in Office Space is the role that follows him around, and it is worth remembering the character began as a cartoon Mike Judge made years earlier. Dodgeball and Brooklyn Nine-Nine are the other comic parts people quote at him.
The voice work
Root has been a working voice actor as long as he has been on screen. Gravity Falls is the best-written show on this list, and Rango is the most interesting film, a western animated as though nobody had told the animators it was for children.
The dramatic late career
From about 2014 the serious offers started arriving. Get Out uses him for barely two minutes and makes every second count, and The Man in the High Castle is the sustained dramatic television role.
