Stephanie Sheh

Stephanie Sheh works on both sides of the recording booth glass. She performs, and she also directs ADR and writes adaptation scripts, which in English-language anime dubbing makes her the person deciding how a line will fit a mouth flap before anyone reads it aloud. That double role is unusual, and it shows in performances that tend towards the economical rather than the showy.

The roles she is best known for are Japanese animation dubbed into English: Hinata in the Naruto franchise, Orihime in Bleach, Usagi Tsukino in Viz Media's re-dub of Sailor Moon, Yui Hirasawa in K-On!, Eureka in Eureka Seven. None of those are among the credits listed here, which makes this page a view of the other half of her career.

That other half is American television animation, and it is substantial. She has played Katana across half a dozen DC Super Hero Girls titles between 2015 and 2018, Renee through three Barbie productions, Jinafire Long in two Monster High films, Zhu Li in The Legend of Korra, Mei in LEGO Monkie Kid, Esther Chen in The Ghost and Molly McGee. It is franchise work, done at volume, and the skill it demands is consistency: the same character has to sound identical across five years, several studios and two or three animation styles, with a different director every time. Doing that without the performance flattening into a stock voice is much harder than it looks from outside.
