Stefanie Scott

Every Disney Channel graduate gets handed the same exit, and Scott took it, then kept walking. She started in the family comedy Beethoven's Big Break in 2008, released an EP the following year, and picked up a Young Artist Award for the romance Flipped in 2010. Lexi Reed on A.N.T. Farm ran from 2011 to 2014, won her a second Young Artist Award and made her a face teenagers recognized, and she recorded a run of Disney Channel singles alongside it.

Insidious: Chapter 3 was the pivot, and a smarter one than it looked. A studio horror prequel handed her a lead in 2015, and Quinn Brenner asks for something quite specific: long stretches of being immobilized and frightened, where the only tools available are breath and face. She came back to the character in Insidious: The Last Key.

What she has done since is where it gets interesting. Rather than chasing another franchise she went small and unpleasant: Julia in Beautiful Boy, Ivy in Small Town Crime, Alex in At First Light, and the lead in The Last Thing Mary Saw, a slow, candlelit period horror film that almost nobody watched and that is easily the most ambitious thing on the list. Jem and the Holograms in 2015 is the famous misfire, a toy adaptation that failed loudly and was not her fault. The Disney graduate path usually ends in undemanding genre work. Hers has been better chosen than most.
