Song You-hyun
Song You-hyun is an actor, born 1983.
Read Song You-hyun's credit list and half the entries are job titles rather than names: Section Chief Go, PD Hong, a shaman, a nun, a teacher, Kyung-min's mother. That is not a slight. It is a description of one of the most useful jobs in Korean screen drama, the character actor who arrives with a function, establishes a whole person inside two scenes, and gets out before the plot needs her again.
She trained in acting at the Korea National University of Arts and made her debut in 2001, which means the visible run of work is the back half of a long career. The parts that got noticed came later: Han Go-eun, the cynical boss in Hell Is Other People, and a role in 18 Again, plus the films Mate and Midnight.
The recent volume is the striking thing. 2024 alone brought Project Silence, Uprising, Handsome Guys, No Gain No Love and Mr. Plankton, five credits in one year across film and television. That is an actor in demand rather than an actor being typecast. Earlier she was Kang Se-young in Signal, one of the most admired Korean dramas of the last decade, and Oh In-ah in Now, We Are Breaking Up. She is the sort of performer whose name viewers rarely retain and whose face they always recognise.

Where to start with Song You-hyun
Signal is the place to start, and it is one of the best Korean dramas ever made regardless of her presence in it: a cold-case procedural with a genuinely clever conceit and a very unhappy heart. Her Kang Se-young is a small part carrying a large weight, and it is the clearest demonstration of what a good character actor buys a production.
After that, follow the range rather than the size of the role. Midnight is the tight thriller, The Golden Spoon the high-concept drama, Now, We Are Breaking Up the glossy romance, and Mr. Plankton the recent one that is funnier and sadder than it looks.
For the 2024 run, Project Silence and Uprising put her in big-budget film, and No Gain No Love is the light comedy. Mother is the quietest and probably the best-acted thing on the list.
