Simon Helberg
Simon Helberg is an actor, born 1980.
Simon Helberg spent the early 2000s in the places young comic actors get processed. He was a cast member on MADtv for season eight, in 2002 and 2003, and the film credits from that stretch are exactly what you would expect: National Lampoon's Van Wilder, A Cinderella Story, Evan Almighty, a page's walk-on in Good Night, and Good Luck. Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip in 2006 is where the timing first shows up on a good script.
The Big Bang Theory then took twelve years, from 2007 to 2019, and won him a Critics' Choice Television Award for supporting work in a comedy. Howard Wolowitz was written as the most abrasive character on the show, and Helberg's contribution was to play the bravado as a very thin shell over panic. That choice is the whole difference between the part being funny and the part being intolerable, and he made it early.
The more interesting career runs quietly alongside the sitcom, and it happens at a piano. Florence Foster Jenkins in 2016 cast him as Cosme McMoon, accompanist to a wealthy woman who cannot sing, and brought him a Golden Globe nomination. Annette in 2021 credits him simply as The Accompanist. A Serious Man in 2009 had already used him as Rabbi Scott, the youngest and least useful of the rabbis a desperate man consults. Poker Face in 2023 and Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog back in 2008 fill in the rest: he is a better and stranger actor than twelve years of network comedy ever needed him to be.

Where to start with Simon Helberg
The obvious entry is The Big Bang Theory, and there is no point pretending otherwise, but treat it as the volume rather than the evidence. For what he can actually do, go to Florence Foster Jenkins, where he spends the film reacting at a piano to a sound no professional musician should be able to keep a straight face through, and gets a great deal out of pure discomfort.
A Serious Man is the sharpest three minutes of his screen career, playing a rabbi far too young to be dispensing wisdom, and Annette is the weird one that rewards patience.
For the earlier work, Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog is short, cheap and still funny, and Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip is the Sorkin-era curio where you can hear him learning to land dialogue at speed. Poker Face is the recent episode worth your evening.
