Shantel VanSanten is an actor, born 1985.
VanSanten modelled first, in Teen Vogue and Seventeen, then arrived on screen the way a lot of her generation did: a slasher sequel, The Final Destination, in 2009, and a run as Quinn James on One Tree Hill.
The through-line of the career since is unusual and she has made it into a specialty. She keeps being cast as the woman standing next to a man in crisis, which is normally a thankless structural position, and she keeps refusing to play it as a reaction shot. Julie Swagger on Shooter is the wife of the man the show is named after. Becca Butcher on The Boys exists in the gap left by someone else's rage. Karen Baldwin on For All Mankind, across a run from 2019 to 2026, is the fullest version, a part that begins as an astronaut's wife and is given years of screen time to become a person with her own appetites and failures.
Around that sits a solid procedural and genre career: Patty Spivot on The Flash, Nina Chase across both FBI and FBI: Most Wanted, Kate Drummond on Timeless, Vera Buckley on The Messengers, Jessica Chapel on Gang Related. Where to start with Shantel VanSanten
Watch For All Mankind first. It is the best show she has been in and the best part she has been given, and the alternate-history space race around it is genuinely gripping, but the reason to watch her specifically is that the series lets Karen change over a very long span instead of holding her in place.
The Boys is next, and she is the closest thing that show has to a still centre. Shooter is the workmanlike version of the same job, competently done. If you want the origins, One Tree Hill is where the audience came from and The Final Destination is where the career started, though only one of those rewards a rewatch. The Flash gave her a genuinely likeable detective in a show that had no idea what to do with her, and FBI is the reliable network mode she can now do in her sleep.
The genre television
Where she has spent most of her career, usually as the person keeping a compromised situation upright. For All Mankind is by a distance the best of them and runs her across three decades of alternate history.
The network dramas
The other half: teen drama, procedurals and one thriller. One Tree Hill is where audiences first met her, and the two FBI series are the steady network work in between the better shows.
