Shannen Doherty
Shannen Doherty is an actor, born 1971.
Child work came first and never really stopped. Jenny Wilder on Little House on the Prairie in 1982 and 1983, Kris Witherspoon on Our House from 1986 to 1988, Maggie Malene in Girls Just Want to Have Fun, and a voice part as Teresa in The Secret of NIMH along the way.
Heathers is the performance that ought to have defined her. As Heather Duke she plays social cruelty as an ordinary skill rather than a gothic flourish, which is precisely what that film needs and what most teen movies get wrong.
What defined her instead was Beverly Hills, 90210. Brenda Walsh, from 1990 to 1994, made her one of the most famous people on television at an age when that is difficult to survive. She went back to the character twice, in 90210 in 2008 and in BH90210 in 2019, where the conceit had her playing a version of herself. Charmed then gave her Prue Halliwell from 1998 to 2001 and a second devoted audience.
The film career ran alongside all of it, twice with Kevin Smith: Rene in Mallrats and herself in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back. The later work was mostly low-budget, through Fortress, Hot Seat, Blood Lake and Darkness of Man, and she was rarely the problem with any of it. She published a book, Badass, in 2010. She died of cancer at her home in Malibu on 13 July 2024, at 53.

Where to start with Shannen Doherty
Heathers is the best film here and the best thing in it, still bracing and still funnier than anything it inspired. Watch that first.
Beverly Hills, 90210 is the cultural artifact, and the early run is better than the show's reputation among people who never watched it, with Brenda as the character everything orbits. Charmed is the comfort watch and the fandom that has outlasted the rest. Mallrats is the pick of the films, a Kevin Smith comedy that has aged into something oddly warm, and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back has her playing herself and plainly enjoying it. The Secret of NIMH is worth the detour for anyone who never knew she was in it. Leave Blood Lake: Attack of the Killer Lampreys and Hot Seat to completists; she gave both more than they gave her.
