Seo In-guk

Seo In-guk is an actor, born 1987.

He arrived through a television talent contest, which in Korea is either a launchpad or a ceiling. Seo In-guk, born in Ulsan in 1987, won Superstar K in 2009 as a singer, and for three years that is what he was. The acting breakthrough came in 2012 with Reply 1997, where he played Yoon Yoon-jae, and it worked well enough that the following year's Reply 1994 brought the same character back for a crossover.

What he does better than most of his peers is play men who are not quite human, without letting the register tip into camp. He was the Grim Reaper in Abyss, the personification of ruin in Doom at Your Service, and the lead of Death's Game in 2023. The through line across all three is that he underplays the supernatural and overplays the ordinary irritation, which is a harder balance than it sounds and the reason those shows do not collapse into pantomime. The romantic comedies run on the same instinct: his Louie, in the series listed here as Shopaholic Louis, is absurd without ever being stupid.

The film work is harder-edged than the dramas suggest. Pipeline in 2021 and Project Wolf Hunting in 2022 are both violent genre pictures, and the second in particular is not aimed at the audience that arrived through the romances. The singing never stopped either, and he has hosted KBS award ceremonies between leading roles. The credits run out to 2026.

Where to start with Seo In-guk

Nothing here beats Reply 1997 as a first watch: it is the performance that turned a singer into an actor, and still the loosest and funniest version of him. I Remember You comes next for range, a cold procedural in which he drops the charm entirely. Then take Doom at Your Service and Death's Game for the supernatural register he has made his own, the second being the more ambitious and the one that asks the most of him. Shopaholic Louis is the pure sugar option and better written than it has any need to be. For the other side of the career, Project Wolf Hunting is a brutal action film, and The Smile Has Left Your Eyes is the bleakest thing on the list.
