Sebastian Roché
Sebastian Roché is an actor, born 1964.
Sebastian Roche was born in Paris in 1964 and has spent most of his career in American genre television, usually as the European in the room who knows more than he is saying. The early credits map that out: Tony Jacks in Swift Justice, Longinus in Roar, Gawain in the 1998 Merlin, then Kurt Mendel in Odyssey 5, the one-season science-fiction series that gave him the closest thing to a straight lead he has had.
The skill he brings is harder than it looks: he can play someone who is thoroughly enjoying himself while also being the problem. Balthazar in Supernatural is the case study, an angel who treats a cosmic emergency as somebody else's problem, and the show got years of value out of that mixture of charm and indifference. Thomas Jerome Newton in Fringe is the inverse, a performance with all the warmth machined out of it, delivered at a level pitch that makes him genuinely unsettling. Mikael in The Vampire Diaries and its spin-off The Originals is the third mode: the patriarch who frightens the monsters.
Film work has been smaller and more scattered. Wulfgar in Beowulf, Yuri Landau in A Walk Among the Tombstones, a voice or two in The Adventures of Tintin, a lawyer in 6 Underground. Lately the television has got more prestigious, Cardinal Marivaux in The Young Pope, Father Renaud in 1923, a segment of Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities, and a doctor in the Korean series Queen of Tears.

Where to start with Sebastian Roché
Take Fringe first. Newton is the most controlled thing he has done, and the show uses him sparingly enough that every appearance registers. Then Supernatural for Balthazar, which is the opposite approach and probably the reason most people know his face: loose, funny, and completely uninterested in anyone's crisis.
The Originals is where he gets to be frightening at length, and it is more rewarding than dropping into Odyssey 5, which is a genuinely good premise that ended before it could pay anything off, though completists should still find it. For the recent prestige work, The Young Pope and 1923 both use him in a couple of scenes each and both are worth it. Beowulf is the strangest thing on his list, a motion-capture experiment that has aged into a curiosity, and Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosities is the best one-episode sample of what he can do with a small part.
The genre television
Two decades of American genre television, usually cast as somebody very old and very amused by it. Balthazar in Supernatural is the most enjoyable of them, and Fringe is the best-written show on the list.
The prestige work
The later, more serious roles. The Young Pope is the strangest thing on this list and suits him exactly, and 1923 puts him inside the Taylor Sheridan machine. Cabinet of Curiosities is the horror anthology.
The films
The film work is mostly small parts in large productions. Tintin is the biggest, and A Walk Among the Tombstones is the best made of them, a grim Liam Neeson thriller rather better than its marketing suggested.
