Sean Astin
Sean Astin is an actor, born 1971.
The Goonies made Sean Astin famous at fourteen, and for a while it looked like that might be the whole story. He worked steadily through the teen roles of the late eighties and early nineties, Toy Soldiers and Memphis Belle and the caveman comedy Encino Man, before Rudy in 1993 gave him the part that defined his register: a small, stubborn man who will not be told no.
Then came Samwise Gamgee, and across three Lord of the Rings films Astin took the least fashionable job in the trilogy. Sam has no destiny and no cool lines. What he has is stamina and love, played straight, and Astin's willingness to be completely sincere is exactly why the last stretch of The Return of the King works on people who resist everything else about it. He won a Saturn Award for it.
Since then he has taken the character work that comes: Bob Newby in Stranger Things, a lovely piece of casting that trades on the audience already trusting him; Adam Sandler comedies; a long run of animated Justice League films as Shazam. He is now the national president of SAG-AFTRA, which for an actor whose best roles are all about decency and effort is a fairly consistent second career.

Where to start with Sean Astin
There is only one place to start and it is The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring, then straight through The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Sam is the role his whole career was pointing at, and the third film hands him the two or three moments people still quote at each other.
After that, Rudy is the sincere sports film that made his name in America and runs on exactly the same fuel. The Goonies is where it all began and holds up better than it has any right to. For a modern audience, Stranger Things used him beautifully in its second season, casting him as the one adult in Hawkins with no agenda whatsoever.
Tolkien and the fantasy work
Samwise Gamgee is the emotional centre of the trilogy and by the third film arguably its protagonist. Astin plays complete sincerity with no protective irony at all, which is rarer and considerably harder than it looks.
The eighties and nineties
The child and young-adult career. The Goonies made him famous at thirteen, and Rudy is the one people still quote, a sports film about persistence that is entirely earnest and entirely effective.
The later work
The years since Tolkien, mostly television and Adam Sandler comedies. Stranger Things is the return that reintroduced him to a younger audience, and The Strain is the horror series.
