Sarah Chalke
Sarah Chalke is an actor, born 1976.
Sarah Chalke's first real job was one of the worst assignments in television: replacing another actor mid-run on a hit sitcom. She took over as Becky Conner on Roseanne in 1993 and played the part until 1997, in front of a cast and an audience with every reason to resent her, and she was good enough that the recasting stopped being the story.
Scrubs is the career. Elliot Reid asked for a specific and difficult combination, broad physical comedy from the character who also carries the show's most convincing portrait of professional anxiety, and Chalke could do the pratfall and the panic in the same take. The sitcom work followed from it: Stella Zinman on How I Met Your Mother, Angie on Cougar Town, Amy Gazanian on Backstrom, Melanie Hertzal on Speechless, Merrill Morgan on Friends from College.
The second career is voice work and it is now arguably the bigger one. She has played Beth Smith on Rick and Morty since 2013 and later Space Beth as well, which means playing two versions of the same woman against each other, and she is also Gina Jabowski on Paradise PD, Marie Antoinette on Clone High, Stella on Dogs in Space and Magee across the Prep and Landing shorts.
Drama came last. Kate Mularkey in Firefly Lane, from 2021 to 2023, is the first role that asked her to carry weight with no joke available to release it. A Scrubs revival returns her to Elliot Reid in 2026, which will make it four decades of continuous television.

Where to start with Sarah Chalke
Scrubs is the whole argument, and it holds up better than most comedies of its era. Elliot Reid begins as a bundle of tics and finishes as the most completely written character on the show, and that transition is Chalke's doing at least as much as the writers'.
After that, Rick and Morty is where she has done the most sustained work, and the Beth material is the most consistently interesting thread the show has. Firefly Lane is the case for her as a dramatic actor: unfashionable, unironic, and she is very good in it.
For the sitcom completist, How I Met Your Mother gives her a proper arc as Stella and Roseanne holds the early work. Prep & Landing is twenty minutes well spent at Christmas, and Clone High is the strangest thing in the pool. The Wrong Missy is skippable.
The sitcoms
Nine years as Elliot on Scrubs is the essential work, a character written as anxious and competitive who became the most human thing in it. Roseanne is where she started, as the replacement Becky.
The voice work
Beth in Rick and Morty is a far darker part than a cartoon usually allows and she has held it for a decade. The rest is steady animation work, including the Prep and Landing shorts, which are genuinely good.
The drama and the films
Firefly Lane is the recent lead and the most dramatic thing she has done, a friendship tracked across thirty years. The films are mostly small and the good ones are the independents rather than the studio comedies.
