Sandra 'Pepa' Denton

Sandra Denton, known to everyone as Pepa, was born in Kingston, Jamaica and made her name as one third of Salt-N-Pepa, the trio that carried female rap into the pop mainstream. That is the career. The acting has always been the sideline, and she has been refreshingly relaxed about treating it as one.

Her screen persona is a direct extension of the stage one: fast, funny, physically confident, and best deployed when a film needs someone to walk in and take a scene over without much setup. She worked steadily through the comedies and street dramas of the 1990s, Jason's Lyric, Who's the Man?, Joe's Apartment, then reappeared decades later as herself in Coming 2 America, by which point the group had become part of the furniture of American pop culture.

The larger part of her television career has been reality and documentary, which is less a demotion than an accurate reflection of what the culture wanted from hip-hop's founding generation once it stopped selling records. She fronted The Salt-N-Pepa Show on VH1 in 2008, and since 2016 has been a supporting cast member on Growing Up Hip Hop. She also turns up reliably wherever the music's history is being told, from Good Hair to Planet Rock to the 2025 Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony.
