Sam Rockwell
Sam Rockwell is an actor, born 1968.
Rockwell spent the nineties in small independent films, Basquiat among them, before Galaxy Quest and The Green Mile in 1999 put him in front of a mainstream audience in two opposite registers: a cowardly bit-part actor and a genuinely vile prisoner. He has never entirely left either mode.
His specialty is men with an inflated idea of themselves. Justin Hammer in Iron Man 2 is a weapons magnate who mostly wants to be liked. Zaphod Beeblebrox in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy is swagger with nothing behind it. Charley Ford in The Assassination of Jesse James is a hanger-on who knows he is a hanger-on. What raises them above caricature is the panic Rockwell keeps just under the surface, and the fact that he is a physical comedian before he is anything else, always doing something with his hands or his feet while the scene happens around him.
Moon is the counter-argument: ninety minutes alone on screen with none of the shtick available, and still the best thing he has done. The Academy Award came later, for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri, where he plays a violent and stupid policeman handed far more grace than he has earned. He was nominated again the following year for Vice, and has since collected Primetime Emmy nominations and a Tony nomination. Jojo Rabbit and See How They Run confirm he is still the most reliably surprising actor in any ensemble he joins.

Where to start with Sam Rockwell
Moon is the first stop and it is not close. One actor, no supporting cast to bounce off, and the film works entirely because he makes two versions of the same man feel like different people.
Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri is the Oscar performance and the most uncomfortable one; you are meant to dislike him, and the film keeps testing how long you can. Jojo Rabbit and Seven Psychopaths are the funniest, both trading on his gift for men enjoying themselves far too much.
Galaxy Quest is the perfect light introduction, and The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is the quiet great one nobody mentions, with Rockwell doing the least showy work of his life. Iron Man 2 is the popcorn entry.
The one-man showcases
Films that hand him the entire running time and trust him with it. Moon is the purest version, a man alone with a machine and a copy of himself, but the pattern repeats every time a director works out that he can hold a frame without help from anyone else in it.
The comic register
The mode people love him in: a man convinced he is the most interesting person in the scene, and frequently correct. He plays it broad enough to be funny and specific enough that the desperation underneath keeps showing through the joke.
Weak men rather than evil ones
Rockwell has made a speciality of characters who are cowardly rather than villainous, and he plays the difference precisely. From the preening arms dealer to the deputy in Ebbing, the through line is a man who wants to be respected and has no idea how to earn it.
The nineties independent years
Before anyone knew the name he spent a decade in small American films playing thugs, drifters and background menace. These are worth digging out for how completely formed the screen presence already was on almost no screen time at all.
