Sam Huntington

Sam Huntington is an actor, born 1982.

Sam Huntington was a child actor before he was anything else, cast as Mimi-Siku opposite Tim Allen in the 1997 comedy Jungle 2 Jungle. Teen comedy took him through the next stretch, Detroit Rock City in 1999 and Not Another Teen Movie in 2001, and then Superman Returns handed him Jimmy Olsen in 2006, which remains the credit most people recognise.

He has a specific and undervalued function: he is the sincerity in the room. Jimmy Olsen only works if someone plays enthusiasm without irony, and Huntington does it without ever tipping into mugging. The same quality drives Eric in Fanboys, a comedy about obsessive Star Wars fans that needs one character who genuinely means it, and Josh Levison in the Syfy series Being Human, which he played from 2011 to 2014. Josh is the anxious, apologetic one, a part that could be insufferable and is not, because Huntington plays the apologising as real rather than as a tic.

The rest is a working actor's spread. He had a recurring run as Mitchie Mendelson on Rosewood from 2015 to 2017, appeared in the comic adaptation Dylan Dog: Dead of Night, turned up in the Veronica Mars film, and had a small, true part in Sully. Lately he has been in the Netflix comedy A Man on the Inside and the diner thriller The Last Stop in Yuma County.

Where to start with Sam Huntington

Take Being Human first. It ran from 2011 to 2014, which is enough room to see what he actually does, and Josh is the role that lets him be funny, frightened and decent in the same scene without any of the three cancelling the others out.

For the film side, Superman Returns is the famous one and his Jimmy Olsen is the warmest thing in a very cold film. Fanboys is affectionate and silly and probably the purest use of him. The Last Stop in Yuma County is the best-made film on this list by some distance, a tight, mean little thriller where he is part of a strong ensemble.

Sully gives him about four minutes and he does something real with them. Jungle 2 Jungle is where it began and has not aged especially well, and Not Another Teen Movie is only for people with fond memories of 2001.
