Sahr Ngaujah
Sahr Ngaujah is an actor.
Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana to parents who had arrived from Sierra Leone by way of Britain, Sahr Ngaujah grew up mostly in Atlanta and then spent much of his early working life in experimental theatre in Amsterdam. That is an unusual apprenticeship for an American actor, and it shows in the physical confidence of what he does.
The stage is where his reputation was made. He played Fela Kuti in the Broadway musical Fela! in 2009, a part that asks a performer to sing, dance and hold a room all evening in the register of a bandleader who used a stage as a political platform, and it brought him a Tony nomination. A second nomination followed for Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec in Moulin Rouge!
Screen has used him more narrowly. He has been a recurring presence in genre television, in Last Resort, Marvel's Luke Cage and Prodigal Son, and a supporting player in films ranging from Stomp the Yard to Money Monster, Vox Lux and Patti Cake$. He is good in all of them and not one of them asks him for what the stage asks. That gap is worth knowing about before you go looking, because the filmography is a working actor's filmography, and the performances people describe in superlatives happened in theatres.

Where to start with Sahr Ngaujah
Begin with Last Resort. It is a short-lived series with a genuinely good premise, and it hands Ngaujah more room than any other screen credit here does.
After that, Marvel's Luke Cage for his most-seen work, and Patti Cake$ for the most interesting film part of the group. Money Monster and Vox Lux are small roles in bigger pictures, worth catching if you are watching them anyway rather than as destinations. Stomp the Yard and The Signal are early credits and show a looser, younger performer still working out what the camera wants. Prodigal Son is procedural filler. And if a chance ever comes to see him on a stage, take that over everything above, because the stage is where the work actually is.
