Ricky Whittle
Ricky Whittle is an actor, born 1979.
Whittle modelled for Reebok before he acted, which matters less as trivia than as a description of how British television first used him. He appeared in the football drama Dream Team as Ryan Naysmith, then spent years on Hollyoaks as Calvin Valentine, the soap role that made him famous at home, and finished second on Strictly Come Dancing in 2009.
The American crossover arrived in stages: a recurring role on VH1's Single Ladies in 2012, then ABC's Mistresses in 2014, neither of which is among the credits listed here, and then Lincoln on The CW's The 100 from 2014 to 2016.
American Gods (2017) is the lead, Shadow Moon across three seasons, and it is a strange assignment. Shadow is written as a reactor, a man things happen to and around while he declines to explain himself. Whittle plays the withholding rather than the confusion, which is the right choice and also why some viewers found him opaque. He is physically imposing on screen and used better still than moving.
Since then the work has been genre: Bishop in Land of Bad (2024), Clint in Nappily Ever After (2018), Captain East in Austenland (2013), the voice of Cross in Secret Level (2024), and Archangel (2026).

Where to start with Ricky Whittle
Three seasons of American Gods are the headline, and the first is the one to judge him on, while the adaptation is still confident and Shadow's passivity reads as strategy rather than absence.
The 100 is the more purely enjoyable television. Lincoln was never the lead and became the emotional anchor of the show anyway, which tells you something about what Whittle does with limited material.
At the lighter end, Austenland is a small comic part in a very silly film and Nappily Ever After is the romantic register. Land of Bad is competent action. Secret Level is voice work and a curiosity. Hollyoaks Later is the soap spin-off if you want to see where it all began, though the parent series is not among the credits listed here.
