R. F. Kuang is an author.
Rebecca F. Kuang is a Chinese-American novelist who writes fantasy with an argument inside it. Her debut, The Poppy War, is a grimdark military fantasy that draws openly on the Second Sino-Japanese War and does not flinch at the massacre it is built around. Babel, or the Necessity of Violence followed in 2022, reached the top of the New York Times bestseller list and won the Nebula Award for Best Novel; she has also taken a Locus Award for Best Fantasy Novel. She is the inaugural Millard Distinguished Writer in Residence at the College of the Holy Cross.

Where to start with R. F. Kuang
Babel is the one to start with, an Oxford novel about translation as an instrument of empire whose footnotes are doing real work rather than decoration. The Poppy War is rougher and far more brutal, and it is the better choice if you want the war-fantasy engine rather than the argument. Her piece in Star Wars - Empire Strikes Back - From a Certain Point of View is a curiosity. Yellowface, her publishing satire, is not in the catalogue.
