Pendleton Ward
Pendleton Ward is a writer, born 1982.
Ward created Adventure Time, which is enough of a legacy for most careers, and the odd thing is how little he kept for himself. Having built a series set in a ruined, candy-coloured world with a genuinely strange emotional undertow, the voice he took in it was Lumpy Space Princess: a croaking, self-absorbed, permanently aggrieved cloud. Creators usually cast themselves as the wise mentor. He cast himself as the most irritating character on the show.
He has worked for Cartoon Network Studios, Frederator Studios and Netflix Animation, and the through line is a preference for loose structure over plot machinery. Bravest Warriors ran as a web series while Adventure Time was at its peak. The Midnight Gospel, made for Netflix in 2020, took recorded interviews and built animation around them, so the conversation is real and the images are anything but, and the mismatch is the whole design.
The Adventure Time universe outlived its original run, and Ward stayed inside it as a performer rather than a showrunner, returning for Distant Lands and then Fionna and Cake, where the credit here is for Ellis P and Norm. His most recent directing credit here is Adult Swim's The Elephant in 2025.

Where to start with Pendleton Ward
The work is Adventure Time, and the standard advice about it applies: the first season plays as a silly children's cartoon, and the show becomes something else entirely once it starts trusting its own backstory. Give it until the middle of season two before deciding.
If you want the adult version of Ward's sensibility, The Midnight Gospel is the one to see, an animated series built over real interview recordings that lets the pictures wander while the conversation goes somewhere serious. It is uneven and unlike anything else.
Bravest Warriors is the short-form sketchbook, useful for seeing the same ideas at lower stakes. Adventure Time: Distant Lands and Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake are the continuations, the second of which is aimed squarely at the audience that grew up with the original, and Adult Swim's The Elephant is the newest thing he has directed.
