Pearce Quigley is an actor.
Salford gave Pearce Quigley one of the most distinctive deliveries in British television, and it has carried him a long way with very few obvious leads. The voice is flat, slow and entirely unbothered, the timing sits half a beat behind where you expect it, and the effect is that he can make an ordinary line about a hedge the funniest thing in the episode.
Detectorists is the perfect deployment of it. As Russell, one half of a laconic double act on the edge of the club, he does an enormous amount of comic work with barely any dialogue, and the show understands that the pauses are the joke. The Gentlemen used the same instrument for something colder, casting him as Gospel John, where the flatness reads as menace rather than eccentricity. That is the useful thing about a real deadpan: it points in either direction.
The rest is a long and varied British character-actor career: period work in Peterloo and The House of Mirth, a policeman in Millions, a poker acquaintance in a Woody Allen film, sitcom in 15 Storeys High and Lovesick, an early credit on Queer as Folk, and steady recent jobs in The Critic, Bank of Dave 2 and Art Detectives. He also plays Will in a BBC Radio 4 sitcom, which is where that voice belongs by rights.

Where to start with Pearce Quigley
Detectorists first, and it is not close. Russell is a supporting part with a handful of lines a series and he is somehow among the funniest things in it, which tells you exactly what Quigley does. The show is also gentle, beautifully shot and about almost nothing, in the best way.
Then The Gentlemen, where Gospel John turns the same deadpan into something you would not want pointed at you. Peterloo and The House of Mirth are the serious period work, the second handing him a magnificently dull suitor to play absolutely straight.
After that: 15 Storeys High for the tower-block sitcom his timing was made for, Lovesick for the softer modern comedy, Queer as Folk for the early credit, and Millions for a small part in a children's film far better than it needed to be.
