Olivia Colman
Olivia Colman is an actor, born 1974.
Olivia Colman spent roughly a decade as a British comedy regular before anyone outside the country knew her name. She was Sophie in Peep Show, the office woman orbiting two awful men, and PC Doris Thatcher in Hot Fuzz, and she was reliably the funniest person in scenes she was not meant to dominate. Then Tyrannosaur in 2011 and Broadchurch in 2013 revealed a dramatic actor of frightening range, and the second half of the career happened very quickly.
The specific gift is that the comedy never leaves. Queen Anne in The Favourite is grotesque, needy, funny and genuinely tragic inside single scenes, and the Academy Award for Best Actress followed. Playing Elizabeth II in The Crown she made the least expressive woman in Britain readable, and took an Emmy and a Golden Globe for it. Her face does an enormous amount of work: she can register an insult landing while smiling straight through it.
She is now one of the busiest actors alive, and she spends that status oddly and well, taking small parts in animation and blockbusters and then vanishing into something like The Lost Daughter or Empire of Light. On the evidence of Wicked Little Letters and Fleabag she is also entirely happy to play a monster. The through line across all of it is that she never asks the audience to approve of her characters.

Where to start with Olivia Colman
The Favourite first. Yorgos Lanthimos hands her a gout-ridden, grief-stricken, childish queen and she plays all of it at once, which is the clearest possible statement of what she can do.
The comedy is essential background rather than a footnote. Peep Show shows the decade of sitcom craft sitting under everything else, and Fleabag gives her the most quietly vicious character on this list in a handful of scenes.
For drama, Broadchurch is the great television performance, a procedural in which she plays grief and professional humiliation without one showy moment, and Tyrannosaur is the hardest watch and the finest work. The Crown and The Father are the prestige entries, both excellent. Wicked Little Letters is what to put on when you want her having fun.
Fifteen years of British comedy
Before anyone thought of her as a dramatic actress she spent a decade and a half as the funniest person in several British sitcoms. Sophie in Peep Show is the long one, and Twenty Twelve is where the reappraisal quietly started.
The awards run
Tyrannosaur is where the drama started, Broadchurch made her a national fixture, and The Favourite won the Oscar. The Lost Daughter and The Father are the two performances that show what she can do with almost no dialogue at all.
Family films and voice work
The children's films pay for the rest and she is never lazy in them. Her wolf in Puss in Boots: The Last Wish is the standout piece of voice work, a whistling bounty hunter who frightened a great many small children.
