Nancy Lenehan
Nancy Lenehan is an actor, born 1953.
Lenehan, from Long Island, made her big screen debut in Smokey and the Bandit II in 1980 and has worked without a visible gap ever since, mostly in the specific job American television invented for her: the mother, teacher, principal or neighbour who has already made up her mind about you and is not going to pretend otherwise.
What she does better than almost anyone is flat disapproval, held long enough to become funny, and then the small warm crack in it that arrives one line later. Kay Hickey on My Name Is Earl is the definitive version. Carol Strong in Catch Me If You Can gets a handful of scenes and turns them into a whole life. She is billed simply as Kaufman's Mother in Adaptation. and does not need more. Marge Jenkins in Pleasantville, Nancy Ryan on Veep, Karen Love on Dharma & Greg: the register barely changes and it never wears out.
The strange line in her record is sitcom regulars. She was cast as a series lead or regular over and over in shows that did not last, from Great Scott! and The Faculty to Married to the Kellys, Worst Week, How to Be a Gentleman and People of Earth. Recurring work carried her through instead, on Grace Under Fire, Caroline in the City, Ellen and Veep.
She is still going, with Night Swim and Self Reliance in 2024 and The Paper in 2025.

Where to start with Nancy Lenehan
The fastest way in is My Name Is Earl, where Kay Hickey gets enough episodes for the whole character to build, exhausted and unimpressed and occasionally, briefly, loving.
For the films, Adaptation. and Catch Me If You Can make the case in about five minutes each. Both give her a version of the same woman and both are better scenes for her being in them. Pleasantville uses her decency straight rather than for laughs, which is a good corrective if you only know the sitcom mode. Veep is the sharpest comic environment she has worked in, and she holds her own in a show built entirely out of people talking faster than her. If you want the leading role that got away, Married to the Kellys is the one where she was the matriarch, and Self Reliance shows she is still doing it more than forty years in.
The sitcoms that were cancelled
An unusually long list of shows she was a regular on that did not get a second season. People of Earth is the one that genuinely deserved better, a strange and warm comedy about an alien abduction support group.

Where most viewers have actually met her, four episodes at a time across three decades of American comedy. Veep and My Name Is Earl are the two worth going back for.
