Mo Amer
Mo Amer is an actor, born 1981.
Stand-up came first for Mo Amer, and for a long time it was all there was. Born in Kuwait, he worked clubs for years and toured as part of the trio Allah Made Me Funny before the Netflix hour The Vagabond put his name in front of a wider audience. The material was always autobiographical: a Palestinian family, displacement, and a very long wait for legal status, delivered as comedy rather than as testimony.
Screen acting arrived through Ramy, where he played Mo, the cousin who owns the diner, and where his function was to say the blunt thing the show's protagonist is too self-conscious to say out loud. It worked well enough to earn him his own series. Mo, which he created and stars in, is the one that matters. Built directly on his experience as a Palestinian refugee, its real achievement is tonal: it can put an asylum hearing and a broad family argument in the same half hour and never tell you which one is the joke.
Around that he has taken conventional supporting parts, including Karim in Black Adam and a role in Sweet Dreams, both of them the reliable comic-sidekick job rather than anything that needs him specifically. He hosted a season of Doha Debates in 2023.

Where to start with Mo Amer
Watch Mo. There is no real argument about it: he created it, it is the only place where his voice is not filtered through someone else's show, and it does something most immigrant comedies dodge by letting the bureaucracy be boring and frightening at the same time.
Ramy is the right follow-up, partly because it is a very good series in its own right and partly because seeing him as a supporting player there shows how much of Mo's texture is specifically his. Black Adam is the mainstream credit and the least interesting use of him, though he is the most human thing in it, and Sweet Dreams is a minor comedy for people who want more. If you can find the stand-up first, the series lands harder.
