Minka Kelly's career has a clear centre of gravity, and it is Lyla Garrity on Friday Night Lights (2006 to 2009). The part was written as a small-town archetype, the pretty girl whose life is arranged around other people's ambitions, and the show refused to let it stay one. Kelly played the refusal well: Lyla is composed in public and much less certain in private, and the performance lives in the distance between those two settings.
The film work that followed leaned on how she looks rather than on what she can do with it. She is Autumn in (500) Days of Summer, which is a structural joke more than a role, Joanna in Just Go with It, Sara in The Roommate, and Jackie Kennedy in The Butler, a piece of casting that asks for an impression and gives her almost no room to do anything else. None of it is bad work. Very little of it is written.
Television has been kinder, because television gives her time. Gaby on Parenthood, Miranda on The Path, Samantha in Euphoria, and Dawn Granger in Titans, where the superhero costume is honestly less interesting than the exhaustion she plays underneath it. More recently she has taken leads in smaller pictures and streaming series, Ransom Canyon and Champagne Problems among them. She is a better actor than her filmography suggests, which is a common and unfair situation.

Where to start with Minka Kelly
Begin at Friday Night Lights and give it more than one episode. Lyla Garrity is the role everything else on this page is measured against, and the show is patient enough to let her change slowly rather than in a single scene.
After that, Parenthood is the closest thing to a second helping of the same warmth, and The Path is the most demanding thing she has been given, a drama about belief that gives her something to be frightened of. Titans is the fan entry point and she is a good deal better in it than the show deserves; Euphoria uses her for one sharp, uncomfortable idea. On the film side, (500) Days of Summer is the famous credit even though the part is tiny, and The Butler is worth a look purely for the casting question it raises. The Roommate is the one to leave until you have run out of the others.
